Aarohi is first and foremost a community of like-minded students passionate about Indian Classical Music. We have a broad base of members, including both enthusiasts and trained musicians. Aarohi is a unified group - we are not a competition team, nor do we promote individuals. This performance is a product of everyone’s hard work and practice. Secondly, Aarohi seeks to bring awareness of Indian Classical Music to the Georgia Tech community. In Fall 2018, we hosted a strings lec-dem with sitar/violin. We hope to do more such as performing at multicultural events and campus residence halls. Lastly, we seek to develop talent amongst all members to produce quality performances. We plan to have at least 1-2 concerts every year. If you have an event needing classical musicians (e.g. a wedding reception, cultural event, any sort of aradhana), please let us know and we can put together a group of our members to come and perform. Our last piece showcases a modern-day form of music. Fusion has appeared through highly popular venues such as Coke Studio, bringing traditionally western instruments into Indian classical music and creating a completely new subgenre of Indian fusion music as we know it today. This is a newly composed piece including elements of blues, rock, and carnatic music. We will now journey to the mid 1900s, where there was a movement toward making music accessible to a wider audience. Ghazals are a form of amateur poetry or odes originating in Arabic poetry. A ghazal is a form of poetic expression describing pain, loss, or separation and the beauty of loss despite that pain. In this song, the composer expresses the many great things he has experienced in life. For a brief moment, in an intoxicated state, the composer philosophizes about the matters of the heart and gives us a glimpse in the irony of the situations of love. Meanwhile in North India in the Mughal empire (16th-18th century) they were playing sitar in royal courts. Even though he was illiterate, Akbar was a huge proponent of the arts and helped them flourish during his reign. This piece was first sung by Mian Tansen, a singer in Akbar’s court. We begin in the 12th century. Our first piece is known as an Ashtapati. Ashtapati refers to the Sanskrit hymns composed by Jayadeva in Geetha Govinda. The word ashtapati translates to 8 steps, and is named as such due to each hymn consisting of 8 pairs (or charanas) of 2 lines, where each charana describes an event of a story. These collection of poems refer to Lord Krishna and the gopis. In this piece, Poet Sri Jayadeva describes Krishna's delightful nature in this song, as well as his love for Radha.
